OpenAI isn't satisfied with dominating the AI software game. According to a new report from one of the most well-connected hardware analysts in the world, the company is now building a full-blown smartphone. And it has some serious names attached to the project.

The AI Company That Wants to Kill the App Store

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, best known for his accurate predictions about Apple's hardware plans, dropped a bombshell on April 27. According to his supply chain sources, OpenAI is working with MediaTek and Qualcomm to co-develop a custom smartphone processor, while Luxshare, one of Apple's own manufacturing partners, would handle the system design and assembly.

None of the companies involved have confirmed the partnership, and this remains an analyst report rather than an official announcement. But Kuo's track record on supply chain intel is hard to dismiss.

Mass production is targeted for 2028, with specs and suppliers expected to be locked down by late 2026 or early 2027. The market took the report seriously enough that Qualcomm shares surged roughly 13% in premarket trading the day after it dropped.

No Apps, Just Agents

This wouldn't be a regular Android phone with ChatGPT slapped on top. Kuo describes a device where AI agents are the interface, so instead of tapping through apps to order food, book a ride, or check email, you'd interact with agents that handle those tasks directly.

Sam Altman himself hinted at this direction the day before Kuo's report, posting on X that it feels like the right time to "seriously rethink how operating systems and user interfaces are designed" and that there should be a protocol "equally usable by people and agents."

The phone would maintain what Kuo calls "full real-time state," continuously capturing your location, activity, and context to feed the agents. Lighter tasks would run on-device using smaller AI models, while heavier processing would get offloaded to the cloud. Think of it as the entire phone being one big, always-aware AI assistant.

Why OpenAI Would Even Try This

The logic isn't hard to follow. Right now, OpenAI is stuck inside other people's hardware, where Apple and Google control which AI features get deep system access and which don't. They decide the rules of the app store, the API limitations, and the integration depth.

Building its own phone would give OpenAI full vertical control over the hardware, the processor, the operating system, and every layer of the AI stack. It's the same playbook Apple used when it started designing its own chips, because custom silicon tuned specifically for its software gave Apple a performance edge that no Android phone has been able to match. OpenAI wants to do the same thing, but for AI inference instead of general computing.

Kuo projects 300 to 400 million annual shipments if the device takes off. For context, Apple ships around 230 million iPhones per year and Samsung moves about 220 million, which makes those projections wildly ambitious for a company that has never shipped a single piece of consumer hardware.

The Jony Ive Connection

This phone project is actually OpenAI's second major hardware play. The first started when the company acquired Jony Ive's startup io for $6.5 billion in May 2025. Ive is the legendary Apple designer behind the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

Under Ive's leadership, OpenAI already has a lineup of devices in the works. A camera-equipped smart speaker priced between $200 and $300 is expected to launch in early 2027, smart glasses are planned but won't reach mass production until 2028, and a smart lamp prototype exists, though it's unclear whether it will ever actually ship.

The first OpenAI hardware product to reach consumers will likely be a pair of AI-powered earbuds codenamed "Sweetpea," reportedly scheduled for September 2026, featuring a 2nm Samsung Exynos chip for on-device AI processing.

So the phone isn't a pivot away from those plans but rather an expansion, because OpenAI apparently wants to be everywhere, in your ears, in your living room, and in your pocket.

The Graveyard of AI Hardware

There's a reason to be skeptical about all of this, since every standalone AI device that has launched in recent memory has flopped spectacularly.

Humane AI Pin didn’t strike a chord with the people when it got launched

The Humane AI Pin raised $230 million from top-tier investors and launched at $699 plus a $24 monthly subscription, but every single device was permanently bricked on February 28, 2025, after HP bought what was left of the company for $116 million.

The Rabbit R1 sold 100,000 units on pre-order hype after CES 2024, but within five months only about 5,000 active users remained, which amounts to a 95% abandonment rate. Both products promised to replace the smartphone, and neither came close.

OpenAI's pitch is different in a few important ways. It has ChatGPT with nearly a billion weekly users, Jony Ive and a team packed with former Apple veterans, partnerships with the same companies that build iPhones and Galaxy phones, and the financial muscle of roughly $20 billion in annualized revenue to absorb the costs of getting hardware wrong.

But financial muscle doesn't automatically translate into manufacturing expertise, carrier relationships, retail distribution, warranty management, or any of the thousand operational details that separate a great prototype from a successful product.

The Bottom Line

OpenAI building a phone is the clearest signal yet that it sees the smartphone as the primary AI device for years to come. But between an unconfirmed analyst report and a 2028 mass production target, there's a long road of execution ahead.

The earbuds and smart speaker will be the first real test of whether OpenAI can actually ship hardware, and if those stumble, the phone becomes a much harder sell.

The companies building the smartest models are starting to realize that controlling the software isn't enough, and that you need to control the device too. Whether OpenAI can pull that off is anyone's guess, but the ambition alone is worth paying attention to.
